Programs Overview

Maryland Art Place (MAP) has been an anchor for contemporary arts in Maryland since 1981. Since its inception, MAP has effectively inspired, supported and encouraged artists in this region by offering exhibition opportunities, workshop and mentorship programs.

MAP creates a dynamic environment for artists to engage with the public, and each other, by nurturing and promoting new talents.

MAP offers a challenging schedule of innovative and diverse contemporary art experiences throughout the year. This includes the presentation of 6-8 annual exhibitions with complimentary programming including: gallery talks, performances and professional development workshops.

Ainsley Burrows | A Magnetic Cluster of Suns | Hotel Indigo
Maryland Art Place, in partnership with Hotel Indigo Baltimore is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Maryland-based artist, Ainsley Burrows. The exhibition is on view at Hotel Indigo, located at 24 West Franklin St. from November 15 - January 16. A public reception will take place Wednesday, December 4 from 5 to 7 PM.

Maryland Art Place (MAP) is pleased to announce it will be this year’s Baltimore Fine Art Print Fair (BFAPF) Cultural Partner.  BFAPF 2022 (its inaugural year) was a tremendous success and is returning March 30–April 2, 2023. After it’s triumphant debut, the fair returns with nineteen exhibitors offering the latest contemporary art in prints. Galleries, dealers, and print publishers from across the United States will present fine art prints, portfolios and artist books from both established and emerging artists. Patrons may browse, converse, and shop for their latest acquisition.

MAP incorporated on January 30th, 1981 to educate the general public in the area of contemporary, visual art produced by Maryland artists through exhibitions and performances; serving as an information center for Maryland artists and coordinating activities of other art-oriented institutions and organizations in Maryland. “The Baltimore Fine Art Print Fair is such an incredible event for the city! MAP directly supports 400-600 individual artists through exhibition opportunities, art sales, affordable rent, fiscal agency, internship opportunities and more. MAP’s building is a beacon for the arts in downtown Baltimore city, not far from this year’s print fair, located at 218 West Saratoga Street within the Bromo Arts & Entertainment District.

MAP is also the managing partner of the Maryland State Artist Directory & Resource Bulletin on behalf of the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC). MAP has remained the responsible partner for the care of this critical resource for over 25 years. The Maryland Arts Directory is a free online platform that showcases the high-caliber, diverse, and relevant work of Maryland’s artists and arts organizations and promotes the vitality of Maryland’s arts communities.

4/8: Out of Order Install Day

OUT OF ORDER INSTALL DAY: Saturday, April 8  | 7 am to Midnight

PROSPECTUS

Maryland Art Place (MAP) is excited to announce Out of Order (OOO),  MAP’s  Annual Spring Benefit Exhibition & Silent Auction, on Friday, April 21, 2022, at 6 o'clock in the evening. This year marks the 26th year of OOO. The auction will be both a virtual and physical exhibition and will be held in the MAP building located at 218 West Saratoga Street, just within the Bromo Arts District. OOO is a highly celebrated exhibition-event, and a ‘one-night-only’ opportunity for patrons and collectors to acquire contemporary art at unbelievably low silent auction prices.

Submission Requirements and Install:

Any artist is welcome to hang one original work of art on a first-come, first-served basis. Installation will take place Saturday, April 8, 2023, from 7am-midnight. We will have donuts and coffee for the early birds and pizza and Karaoke in the basement from 9pm to 11pm for the late installers.  No need to sign up in advance, just come by MAP's first- floor gallery space @ 218 West Saratoga Street in the Bromo Arts District! You must be able to install your own work on April 8th to participate in the exhibition.

  •  All work must come framed and ready to hang.  (size requirement is 40" x 40" or less)

  •  Artists must install their own work on Artist Install day, Saturday, April 8 between the hours of 7 am and midnight

  •  NO Application fee to exhibit!

  •  Only ONE submission per artist

  •  Please document your work prior to arrival. This image will be used for virtual bidding purposes and submitted with your loan agreement.

  •  The work you include in Out of Order must be for sale. The proceeds from the silent auction are split 50/50 between the artist and MAP. All works will be virtually silent auctioned Friday, April 21, 2022 from 6 -10 pm

  •  Participating artists receive free admission to OOO!

4/9: KidOOO Install Day

Calling all Elementary, Middle School and High School level artists!

OUT OF ORDER INSTALL: Friday, April 8 | 7 am to Midnight 

KIDOOO INSTALL: Saturday, April 9 | 11 am to 4 pm 

OOO & KIDOOO EVENT & SILENT AUCTION: Friday, April 22 | 6 pm - 10 pm

MAP is happy to introduce KIDOOO, a youth version of Out of Order!  KIDOOO was created as an opportunity for young artists to exhibit their work in a major arts venue, expanding MAP’s services to students in elementary, middle and high school level arts classes.  

The opening of KIDOOO will take place in tandem with MAP's annual Out of Order on April 22, 2022.

Any artist is welcome to hang one original work of art on the first-come, first-served installation day of KIDOOO.  The open installation day for KIDOOO will take place on Saturday April 9, 2022 from 11am - 4pm. To participate in the exhibition, artists must be ages five-seventeen. No need to sign up in advance, just come by MAP's 2nd floor Gallery @ 218 West Saratoga Street in the Bromo Tower Arts and Entertainment District!

  • All work must come framed and ready to hang. (size requirement is 24" x 24")
  • Registration is free
  • All works must be priced to sell and will be silently auctioned Friday, April 22, 2022 from 6 - 10pm
  • All forms will be virtual. You will receive the link to complete the loan agreement when you arrive. There will be volunteers and staff on-site to assist you.
KIDOOO TICKETS: Mingle with the participating artists, sponsors, patrons and general art enthusiasts during the exciting KIDOOO silent auction and party. A ticket to OOO grants admission to KIDOOO.  Ticket link TBA

5/18: MSAC Art Directory Triennial Exhibition

THIRD MARYLAND STATE ARTS DIRECTORY TRIENNIAL - A Juried Exhibition

On View: Thursday, May 18 - Saturday, June 24

Opening Reception: Thursday, May 18 | 5 pm - 9 pm

In celebration of the talented and diverse array of artists across the state of Maryland, and the ever growing scope of the Maryland Arts Directory, Maryland Art Place (MAP) - in collaboration with the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) are pleased to present this important exhibition Thursday, May 18 at 5 pm in tandem with the Bromo Arts & Entertainment District Spring Art Walk.

Maintained by MAP for over 25 years, the Maryland Arts Directory originated as a regional resource conceived of by MSAC. Curators, collectors and patrons could physically visit MAP to review new visual artworks using slides. As time went by slides became outdated and an official online resource was created making access to artworks much more accessible. 

This year’s roster of talented jurors includes: Jayme McLellan (visual art) - Founder and Director of Civilian Art Projects, José Ruiz (visual art) - Director and Faculty, Curatorial Practices Program at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Rahne Alexander (performance) – Intermedia artist, writer and editor and Gerry LaFemina (literary) acclaimed poet, writer, professor and critic.

The exhibition will take place on three floors of the MAP building located at 218 West Saratoga Street between Park and Howard’s streets in downtown Baltimore city. Parking will be available at the Arrow garage across the street from MAP and on street parking will be free after 6pm. This is a free event.

7/20: MSAC Literary Readings

In celebration of the talented and diverse array of artists across the state of Maryland, and the ever growing scope of the Maryland Arts Directory, Maryland Art Place (MAP) - in collaboration with the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) are pleased to host a in person reading of MSAC directory literary artists.  

 

2023 Cyberwire Creating Connections Call for Entry

Maryland Art Place (MAP) is thrilled to partner with N2K Networks again this year to solicit the replication, reproduction and acquisition of a work of art indicative of “Creating Connections” and cybersecurity. MAP is working with N2K to offer a unique opportunity to female and female identifying visual artists of the greater Baltimore metropolitan area. Collectively, MAP and N2K wish to acquire and license the image of a work of art. The image of that artwork will be reproduced in a limited edition and presented to the guests of N2K’s 2023 Women in Cybersecurity event to be held on October 19, 2023 at the International Spy Museum in Washington, DC.

8/24: BROMO ART WALK

Experience the Bromo Arts District during a night of artistic performances, exhibits, and open studios on Thursday, August 24, from 5 - 9pm! Explore over 30 creative organizations and the work of more than 100 artists. Check out Young Blood @ MAP, an exhibition showcasing the works of recent Baltimore-area Masters of Fine Art graduates. This marks MAP’s 14th Young Blood program which has, to date,  provided an important post-graduate artistic platform for transitioning Masters of Fine Arts students. This state-of-the-art venue is part of the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center, home of the legendary Hippodrome Theatre.

Deck the walls by giving the gift of art this holiday season! Maryland Art Place (MAP) is excited to host its 11th annual UNDER $500 affordable art sale where artwork is sold on a first-come-first-served basis right off our gallery walls! UNDER $500 promotes the purchase of artwork by artists in the Maryland region. Guests can expect to mingle with other artists, collectors, patrons, and general art enthusiasts at the event. Take your purchases home with you the night of the event. Gift wrapping will be available on-site! 

The opening night sale (physical) will take place Friday, November 17 from 6 pm to 10 pm (ticketed) and then again on Saturday, November 18, 2023 from noon - 4pm (free). Saturday is a ‘last chance’ opportunity to snag any artworks that remain on MAP’s walls. Tickets are $30 for opening night and can be purchased at the door or in advance at UNDER5002023.givesmart.com

This year’s theme is WINTER WONDERLAND! Please come in your whitest attire! MAP will have holiday trees on display. Enjoy a cheerful atmosphere with an open bar, light fare and some holly jolly tunes by DJ Amsies and Drag Queen Brooklyn Heights! 

A virtual sale and exhibition will also take place and will be featured online HERE from Saturday, November 18 at 10 am – Black Friday, November 24 at MIDNIGHT. Artwork will NOT be available to view online until November 18 at 10 am. Be sure to register in advance in the interim! Registration is free.

Virtual Buyers Sales & Pick Up: Sold artworks from the virtual auction need to be delivered by the artist to MAP after the sale closes November 24th. MAP is aiming for all sold work to be on site for Buyer pick up by Tuesday December 5th just in time for the holidays. Buyers will be notified once your purchase is secured and onsite at MAP. BUYERS - Please make sure your artwork is at MAP before coming to pick it up. The pickup window will be Dec 5 – Dec 9, from 11am – 4 pm or by appointment. All artwork will be wrapped and ready to fulfill its destiny as the perfect holiday gift!
