Maryland Art Place in partnership with Hotel Indigo Baltimore is pleased to present new original artwork by Baltimore based artist, QRCKY.  The exhibition is on view at Hotel Indigo Baltimore, located at 24 West Franklin St. from September 9 - January 6.  A public reception will take place Thursday, November 10 from 5 to 7 pm.

About the Artist:

“Art is not a luxury; it is a necessity. It documents history -- it helps educate people and store knowledge for generations to come. Generations of people that don’t see themselves in art lose their history. My art allows me to develop an identity and say:  “This is my story. This is what I know.”

Art unity communities allow us to dialogue about history and its legacy. These are some of the most important works I have made. They speak to who I am, my heritage, and my culture.

My work explores the relationship between Black diaspora sensibilities and urban spaces. With influences as diverse as Kara Walker and Jean-Michel Basquiat, new synergies are crafted from constructed and discovered layers. Currently living in Baltimore, I am interested in the sensation of moving, the deconstruction and reassembly of surfaces, and of forgetting and remembering what has come before.”

MARYLAND ART PLACE (MAP) ANNOUNCES 10^th ANNIVERSARY OF ANNUAL AFFORDABLE ART SALE, UNDER  $500, DECEMBER 2022

MAP is excited to celebrate the 10^th anniversary of its annual affordable art sale UNDER $500, opening Friday, December 9th at 6 o’clock in the evening. MAP is located at 218 West Saratoga Street within the Bromo Arts District. Tickets are $25 and will be made available through MissionTix & through MAP’s Givesmart platform.

October 10, 2022 – Baltimore, MD: In December 2013 Maryland Art Place (MAP) launched its first-ever affordable art sale, UNDER $500.  With support from Mission Media in Baltimore city, an Exhibition Event Committee was assembled to address three concerns: 1) bolstering the sale of original artworks by Maryland state artists; 2) encouraging the purchase of those works of art in lieu of traditional, commercial gift giving during the holiday season; and finally 3) developing patronage in itself by demystifying the gallery experience as a scary, elitist white box experience.  In year one MAP nearly sold out the whole show swiftly learning that there was room for more artworks. Keeping the sale UNDER $500 proved to be enticing and beneficial to both artists and patrons alike.

During the Covid pandemic, MAP had to re-imagine how this sale could continue, and in 2020 took the sale virtual for the first time ever. Not limiting the exhibition to the walls of the gallery meant MAP could increase the number of participating artists, number of artworks, sales and scope of the show. Purchases were made from as far away as Texas and Washington State. And in 2021 MAP hybridized the event producing both a virtual and physical show. From 2014 to 2021 The ‘buyers per event’ went from 16-82 and artworks sold from 24 to 93.

This year (2022) MAP is celebrating 10 years of the UNDER $500 event on Friday, December 9^th from 6-10pm (ticketed-$40). All works are sold and removed from the walls with MAP’s signature holiday bow on a first come first served basis that evening. The virtual sale will launch the very next day, Saturday December 10, and any remaining works on the gallery walls from the night before will be presented for purchase free of charge. The virtual sale will last through Wednesday, December 14, 2022. Gallery hours are noon – 4pm

What to expect for your $25: LOTS OF ART FOR SALE <$500, holiday refreshments, signature event cocktail, MAP’s drag queens, Whimsey Thrift and Brooklyn Heights, and Captain Cookie and Milkman Cookie Truck. The event will be MC’d by DJ Aran Keating of Ridiculous Entertainment.

There will be an after party in MAP’s basement (soon to be UNDERBar) from 10-1am. *Parking is free at the Arrow Garage across from MAP until 1am sharp.

Maryland Art Place is proud to present, YOU EFF OH,  a group show that addresses what artists think about extraterrestrial phenomena and how this topic influences, or may be realized in their work. The exhibition will take place at MAP running from September 22 through November 19. Works range in media and address all that happens in the sky has had an effect on our creativity.

DESCRIPTION: What’s out there? - That common question we ask ourselves as we gaze into the night sky. Are we alone? Is it all just uninhabitable rocks in the sky, dusty particles and shiny stars? H.G. Wells wrote War of the Worlds in 1898 and not until a sleepy Friday in June of 2021, as Covid continued to rattle the world, did the US intelligence community quietly release a report on unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) aka UFOs.

Until 2019, when the US Navy started a program to track unidentified flying objects, there had been no formalized way to track these sightings yet we all imagine they occur.  In the 2021 report, there were clearly safety concerns, though some discernment as to whether the 144 recorded incidents were alien or possibly advanced technology from Russia or China. (Note: The idea of UFO’s really started to take shape in 1947 when pilot Kenneth Arnold sighted a series of nine oddly shaped aircraft flying in tandem in the sky). This past May 2022 the House Intelligence Committee held its first hearing on UFO’s in half a century, and in June 2022 it was announced that the government plans to release another unclassified report about what it has collected about UAP’s. Whether legitimate or not, our fascination with alien life and other worldly places has permeated our culture. We love to consume the possibility. From blockbuster hits such as Closer Encounters and ET to kitschy flicks like Mars Attacks, we just can’t get enough. (References: CNN Politics, NPR and CBS News)

MARYLAND ART PLACE (MAP), IN PARTNERSHIP WITH AWARD-WINNING PHOTOJOURNALIST, SUPPORTS THE BALTIMORE ABORTION FUND (BAF)

Maryland Art Place (MAP) is honored to support the Baltimore Abortion Fund (BAF), in collaboration with critically acclaimed photojournalist, Joseph M. Giordano through the sale of select digital photographs from his recent exhibition “ We Used to Live at Night” (held at MAP in May 2022). MAP, the producer of this new giving site and the exhibition "We Used to live at Night,” created the giving site specifically for the purposes of drawing attention and visibility to this important cause. Registration to participate in the sale is easy and free and can be accessed at WeUsedToLive@givesmart.com. Proceeds mutually benefit both Baltimore Abortion Fund and MAP, both 501 c) 3 charitable organizations. . The virtual Exhibition and Sale can be viewed HERE beginning Sunday, August 14 at 10 am and concluding on Sunday, December 14 at 5 pm. 

The Baltimore Abortion Fund (BAF) was founded in 2014 and provides financial assistance and practical support to individuals who live in, or travel to Maryland for abortion care. BAF supports clients residing in all 23 counties of Maryland and Baltimore City. BAF believes that abortions are essential healthcare and a human right.

“We Used to Live at Night” covers 25 years of Baltimore After Dark and includes shots of underground scenes, drag scenes, crime scenes, club scenes, music clubs, portraiture, and more. Selected images for the site are from Giordano’s book “We Used to Live at Night” published by Culture Crush Editions, NYC in 2021. Shots were taken from 1994 and continued until Covid-19 ended the old way of living at night for good.

Joseph M. Giordano is a Baltimore-based photojournalist who has been featured in ProPublica, The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Washington Post, The Baltimore City Paper, i-D Magazine, and Rolling Stone to name a few. Giordano is the co-host of the podcasts 10 Frames Per Second and Photo Flip

The ‘We Used to Live at Night” sale will run from August 14 – December 14 , 2022.

Maryland Art Place (MAP) eagerly anticipates the return of its Annual Spring Benefit Exhibition & Silent Auction, Out of Order (OOO) on Friday, April 22, 2022, at 6’oclock in the evening. This year Out of Order turns 25!! The auction will be both a virtual and physical exhibition and will be held in the MAP building located at 218 West Saratoga Street, just within the Bromo Arts District. Out of Order (OOO) is a highly celebrated exhibition-event, and a ‘one-night-only’ opportunity for patrons and collectors to acquire contemporary art at unbelievably low silent auction prices. All bidding will be virtual so make sure to register in advance and bring your device! Pre-registration is strongly encouraged.

* We will have staff members on-site who will help with the bidding process if needed. Ipads will also be available and a charging station will be set up for your convenience.

This year’s theme for OOO is  Alice in WOOOnderland! Jump down the rabbit hole and join the celebration in support of local & regional artists. Tickets are $40 presale and $45 at the door. Tickets include light tastings and an open bar. All tickets also include free entry to KIDOOO, MAP's accompanying youth-driven OOO exhibition to be held on the 2nd floor of the MAP building the very same evening, and the basement after-party.  Parents/guardians of KIDOOO may attend at a discounted price of $25 presale and $30 at the door. By covering the walls from floor to ceiling, Out of Order provides a salon-style display space for hundreds of artists to hang their work wherever they please. OOO plays host to a variety of artists and professionals practicing in the visual arts and is a great opportunity for students and emerging artists to get their feet wet in Baltimore’s creative sector.

MAP is proud to be partnering with the Art Connection in the Capital Region (ACCR) again this year—a nonprofit that works to enrich lives by increasing access to original visual art in nonprofits throughout Baltimore/DC. Maryland Art Place (http://www.mdartplace.org)  in partnership with Hotel Indigo Baltimore (http://www.ihg.com)  is pleased to present "Sold Separately, a paper-cut series by Baltimore-based artist, Rosa Leff.  The exhibition is on view at Hotel Indigo Baltimore, located at 24 West Franklin St. from March 18th to May 20th. A public reception will take place on May 5th from 5 to 7 pm.

Bio

Between painting alongside her grandmother and watching her father build reproduction antique furniture, Rosa Leff grew up seeing no distinction between fine art and craft.  What mattered was that things were made by hand and done well.  It is with that in mind that she creates her hand-cut paper pieces.  Each of Leff’s papercuts is cut by hand from a single sheet of paper using a knife.  Her cityscapes are based on photos she’s taken in her neighborhood and all over the world.  While Leff is best known for her ability to capture thin tangles of powerlines and intricate brickwork, she also enjoys experimenting with novel media such as paper plates and paper towels.  Leff delights in bringing a modern, urban perspective to a traditional folk medium.

Leff has served on the board of The Guild of American Papercutters (GAP). In addition to being a GAP member, she is a member of The Paper Artist Collective.  Leff has exhibited her work throughout the United States and in China.  She resides in Baltimore with her husband and chihuahuas, Chalupa, and Refrito.

"As I look at this collection of work I can’t help but think about the remarkable amount of energy we all spend hustling.  Whether you love what you do or it’s just a job we all have something motivating us to keep going.  I find it highly unlikely that any 7-year-old has ever proudly proclaimed that one day they would have their very own store specializing in discount communion dresses, but I did once explain to a kindergartener that he actually could turn his passion for cheese into a career.*

It might be hard to think of going to work each day at a laundromat, a discount shoe store, or a used car dealership as living the dream.  But the fact is every business, even bodegas and $7 buffets, did start with a dream.   For city kids like me, it doesn’t get any better than a good tag on a storefront grate, a tavern with a dated sign, or a perfectly placed grease-soaked food stall at midnight.  I cut every last detail I can of these shops because I want you to slow down and appreciate all that went into them— Everything they represent.  After all, the dream is free but the hustle is sold separately."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FRIDAY, JUNE 3, 2022: Maryland Art Place in partnership with Hotel Indigo Baltimore and Alex Cooper Auctioneers  is pleased to present "Everythang’s Gonna Be All Right” featuring artwork by Howard Charles Doolittle. Howie Doolittle, born in Baltimore, MD, in 1940, died in Verdun, France, in 1966 during the Vietnam War. The exhibition is on view at Hotel Indigo Baltimore, located at 24 West Franklin St. from May 20th - August 18th. A public reception will take place on June 9th from 5 to 7 pm.

Alex Cooper Auctioneers is pleased to collaborate with the Maryland Art Place to present the work of Baltimore-born artist, Howie Doolittle. Baltimore-born artist, Howie Doolittle, is a graduate of North Texas State University, was on the brink of a successful career as a visual artist.  Prior to being drafted, his work was shown in multiple exhibitions and received an honorary citation from the Texas Fine Arts Association for commendable work. Doolittle, was an early activist of the Civil Rights Movement, profoundly moved by the inequalities he saw around him.  His work, though decades old, reflects an ongoing struggle and resonates just as strongly today.  If the viewer was unaware of the date of the piece, it is likely they would be viewed as contemporary.

Howie used his work as a voice for change. He was active in local and on-campus civil rights organizations and his art serves as a historical commentary of the world he was seeing.  A number of the pieces are poignant statements on social injustice.  “Everythang’s Gonna Be All Right” and “Million $ Patriot” invites the viewer to examine the social landscape more deeply.  The imagery is thought-provoking and compelling.

One wonders what Doolittle could have achieved had his life not tragically been cut short due to an acute asthma attack while stationed in Europe. His remaining works were entrusted to his sister who lives on the Eastern Shore and felt driven to give his work one final exhibition.  The works will be on view at the Hotel Indigo until the end of summer and then be available at auction on August 27th at bid.alexcooper.com.

Maryland Art Place (MAP), in partnership with the CyberWire, is pleased to announce an open ‘Call to Artists. As an extension of MAP’s annual IMPRINT Project, MAP is working with CyberWire to offer a unique opportunity to female and female-identifying visual artists of the greater Baltimore metropolitan area. Collectively, MAP and the CyberWire wish to acquire and possibly commission, time permitting, plus license the image of a work of art. The image of that artwork will be reproduced in a limited edition and presented to the guests of CyberWire’s 9th Annual Women in Cyber Security reception on October 20, 2022.

ABOUT “CREATING CONNECTIONS”: We live in a time where cyberspace has become inextricably linked to the lives of individuals and organizations of all kinds. Cyberspace is the medium of global commerce and communication, and it is one of the most important factors in the social, political, and technological changes we see occurring today. The CyberWire provides concise and relevant daily briefings on the critical news happening across the global cybersecurity domain. In an industry overloaded with information, we also help individuals and organizations rapidly find the news and information that's important to them.

The aim of CyberWire’s reception is to facilitate connections among women working in cybersecurity and would like to acquire a work of art that reflects the theme of “creating connections.” Inherent in the idea of connections is the idea of networks—social networks, computer networks, and support networks—which may be an important point of departure for acquired or commissioned work. This opportunity is open to female and female-identifying artists living and working in the greater Baltimore metropolitan area. The selected artist(s) will be joining a wonderful roster of artists as this program has developed over the last five years. They are Claire Girodie (2014), Anna and Caroline Zellhofer (2015’), Lindsey McCulloch (2016), Carmen Martini (2017), Shanthi Chandrasekar (2018), and Jackie Hoystead (2019). Note: there was a break in this program due to Covid-19.

General Guidelines & Information

* MAP only accepts 2-d works for reproduction - photography, painting, mixed media or similar welcomed.

* All works must be no less than 4 X 4” and no more than 24 X 20”.

* The reproduction edition will be decided on, and agreed upon at a later date, but will not exceed 500.

* All reproductions will receive a ‘chop or seal’ noting the CyberWire as the publisher.

* All reproductions will be printed on an agreed-upon archival fine art paper, expense absorbed by the CyberWire.

* **Artist agrees to not reproduce the selected artwork at the agreed-upon dimensions of this project as this will devalue the edition. Likewise, CyberWire agrees not to reproduce the image after the edition has ended.

* The CyberWire will cover scanning fees/photography associated with the reproduction.

* Artist agrees to use of artwork images for press and promotional purposes related to this project and event.

* Artist will remain the owner of image copyright.

* Artist is invited to attend the Women in Cyber Security reception on Thursday, October 20, 2022, at the International Spy Museum in Washington, DC.

Benefits to the artist: The selected artist will benefit in the following ways:

May 24, 2022: Maryland Art Place (MAP) is proud to announce a call for Young Blood, an exhibition showcasing the works of recent Baltimore-area Masters of Fine Art graduates.  We are soliciting artists from local (Maryland) universities who are currently or have recently graduated from MFA programs. MFA candidates who graduated this year (2022) are eligible to participate in this exhibition opportunity.

This marks MAP’s 13th Young Blood program which has, to date,  provided an important post-graduate artistic platform for transitioning Masters of Fine Arts students. Since 2008 Young Blood has continually brought recent graduates together to make new connections and present special selections from their thesis project(s). The exhibition will highlight exceptional works ranging in media.

The deadline for submission is Monday, June 13 by Midnight. The exhibition will take place at MAP running July 14 through September 3 with an opening reception on Thursday, July 14 from 6 pm to 9 pm.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FRIDAY, JUNE 3, 2022: Maryland Art Place in partnership with Hotel Indigo Baltimore and Alex Cooper Auctioneers is pleased to present "Everythang’s Gonna Be All Right” featuring artwork by Howard Charles Doolittle. Howie Doolittle, born in Baltimore, MD, in 1940, died in Verdun, France, in 1966 during the Vietnam War. The exhibition is on view at Hotel Indigo Baltimore, located at 24 West Franklin St. from May 20th - August 18th. A public reception will take place on June 9th from 5 to 7 pm. 

Alex Cooper Auctioneers is pleased to collaborate with the Maryland Art Place to present the work of Baltimore-born artist, Howie Doolittle. Baltimore-born artist, Howie Doolittle, is a graduate of North Texas State University, was on the brink of a successful career as a visual artist.  Prior to being drafted, his work was shown in multiple exhibitions and received an honorary citation from the Texas Fine Arts Association for commendable work. Doolittle, was an early activist of the Civil Rights Movement, profoundly moved by the inequalities he saw around him.  His work, though decades old, reflects an ongoing struggle and resonates just as strongly today.  If the viewer was unaware of the date of the piece, it is likely they would be viewed as contemporary.

Howie used his work as a voice for change. He was active in local and on-campus civil rights organizations and his art serves as a historical commentary of the world he was seeing.  A number of the pieces are poignant statements on social injustice.  “Everythang’s Gonna Be All Right” and “Million $ Patriot” invites the viewer to examine the social landscape more deeply.  The imagery is thought-provoking and compelling. 

One wonders what Doolittle could have achieved had his life not tragically been cut short due to an acute asthma attack while stationed in Europe. His remaining works were entrusted to his sister who lives on the Eastern Shore and felt driven to give his work one final exhibition.  The works will be on view at the Hotel Indigo until the end of summer and then be available at auction on August 27th at bid.alexcooper.com.

J.M. Giordano:

"We Used to Live at Night"

Maryland Art Place (MAP) is pleased to exhibit the photography of Joseph M. Giordano, an award-winning photojournalist based in Baltimore city and co-host of the podcasts 10 Frames Per Second and Photo Flip. Underground sex scenes, drag scenes, club scenes, crime scenes, and more are all featured in MAP's upcoming show based on the book published by Culture Crush Editions in 2021. "We Used to Live at Night" covers over 25 years of Baltimore after dark and opened Thursday, March 12, 2022, and runs through Saturday, June 25th, 2022.

This is Giordano's first solo show at MAP which will feature upwards of two dozen black and white photographs. The film portion of the show features upwards of two dozen hand-printed photographs by the artist; however, the show also includes digital prints. Collectively all these Baltimore-based images were shot beginning in 1994, leading up until COVID ended the old way of living at night for good. “MAP’s expansive gallery, caring staff, and dedication to Maryland artists were integral in bringing my book to life. It’s the perfect space to display the rich tapestry of Baltimore at night” says Giordano who has been featured in ProPublica, The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Washington Post, The Baltimore City Paper, i-D Magazine, and Rolling-Stone, to name a few.

Giordano further explains that “Baltimore’s true heart and soul runs not just through one particular scene, but many. Walking the city at night over these past decades meant hearing music leaking through from deep inside an old warehouse filled with partiers who got a text message with an address at 2 a.m. or stumbling upon an open mic hip hop night at a rundown boxing gym, or a house party, or a secret rave behind closed doors”. "We Used to Live At Night" captures these intimate moments and more.

The Culture Crush was founded by French and Italian Vogue veteran, Debra Scherer whose work crosses boundaries between journalism, photography, filmmaking, and creative direction - all with an eye on aesthetics and the cultural narrative. As a creative executive producer, she develops and curates multi-dimensional, multi-sensory stories that call communities to the forefront.

Maryland Art Place in partnership with Hotel Indigo Baltimore is pleased to present SK8R GRLS, a photo series by E. Brady Robinson celebrating the freedom and joy of roller skating. The exhibition is on view at Hotel Indigo Baltimore, located at 24 West Franklin St. from Jan 25th - March 18th. A public reception will take place on March 8th from 5 to 7 pm in celebration of International Women’s Day. 

In Spring of 2021, Robinson took up skating as a way to stay active and reconnect with friends outdoors during COVID-19. During these skate dates, she photographed friends and eventually, a wider network of Baltimore-based female-identifying skaters. This work combines her love of athleticism, fitness, and fashion photography.  These images, made at a moment where it felt like the world was reopening after over a year of closure and isolation during the pandemic, evoke a feeling of release and freedom.

Robinson completed her BFA in photography at MICA and MFA in photography at the Cranbrook Academy of Art.   Her background is in documentary photography and portraiture. The nine archival metal prints on display at the Hotel Indigo depict strong women amidst a backdrop of Baltimore monuments and sites. Locations such as Lake Montebello, Patterson Park, the Druid Hill Tennis Courts, and the Ravens parking lot, signal the public landscape of Baltimore for those that know it well, in contrast to photographs made in the artist’s Maryland Art Place studio which utilize strobe and gel lighting to simulate the vibes of the 80’s roller skating rinks reminiscent of Robinson’s childhood.

The skaters photographed include artists, musicians, and female entrepreneurs; women in the creative scene in Baltimore, including Amy Cavanaugh, Caitlin Gill, Jade Davis, Tina Thompson, Brittany Wight, Les Gray, Hayley Furman, Jessica Lauryn, Sophie Kluckhuhn, and Wildège François.

BIO

E. Brady Robinson is a photographer based in Baltimore and a current resident artist at Maryland Art Place. She divides her time between personal art projects and commissioned work. Her documentary Art Desks was published by Daylight Books with an essay by Andy Grundberg and distributed by ARTBOOK D.A.P

Her photographs have been featured in The Washington Post, Channel One Russia TV, The Bund Shanghai, Hyperallergic, BmoreArt, Featureshoot, Slate among others. Robinson leads photography workshops throughout the United States. Select exhibitions include Lishui Photography Festival China, Orlando Museum of Art, Cornell Fine Arts Museum, Katzen Art Center at American University, AIPAD NYC, and Art Miami. Select collections include American University, Orlando Museum of Art and Spanish Cultural Center, Santo Domingo, DR.

Robinson is a  University Instructor of Photography at Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland, and faculty at ICP in New York. She received her BFA in photography from The Maryland Institute, College of Art, and MFA in photography from Cranbrook Art Academy in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Maryland Art Place (MAP) is pleased to present: "ted[R]ad: Cultivating Collaborative Creative Community" a community-oriented installation-based exhibition that invites local partners and the public to participate in the realization and completion of the project. This site-responsive exhibition is part of the ongoing international art-making exchange project known as tet[R]ad. The primary tenet of this initiative has been to promote collaborative artmaking, community engagement, and activating audience participation. Originally developed by David R. Modler and Samuel H. Peck over a decade ago, this latest rendition will also include the work of Desmond Beach. Within this installation, the creators and collaborators aspire to cultivate a creative forum with members of Baltimore’s communities through a variety of art actions and social practices. The artists wish to foster restorative justice dialogues and build bridges between stakeholders with visual journal exchanges, collaborative drawings, and assemblages that encourage collaboration in idea exchange and cultural production. The ultimate goal is to engage with the local community to give voice and agency to participants that develop meaningful connections. 

Join MAP in realizing this exhibition by visiting our gallery from January 18 - March 12 and contributing to this project. On-site art-making initiatives include: journals, art-making stations, and larger-than-life figurative drawings (courtesy of Baltimore artist Desmond Beach) which utilize public engagement to aid in their completion. Our gallery hours are Tuesday - Saturday between the hours of 12 pm and 4 pm. Drop by and make your mark! A closing reception will be held Thursday, February 24 from 6 pm to 9 pm.
