Cat Gunn // Hotel Indigo

Cat Gunn
SUPER BLOOM
On View: November 19, 2019 - January 10, 2020
Opening Reception: Wednesday, December 18th, 2019 | 6pm - 8pm
Hotel Indigo | 24 West Franklin Street
Free & Open to the Public

Maryland Art Place (MAP) in partnership with Hotel Indigo, are pleased to present its last exhibition of the year at Hotel Indigo by introducing new works by Baltimore based emerging artist, Cat Gunn! As an abstract painter, Gunn is known for re-interpreting the boundaries of the traditional canvas. Gunn's paintings will be hung in Hotel Indigo’s library and Poets Modern Cocktails and Eats. The reception will be held on WednesdayDecember 18th from 6 to 8pm.

Artist Statement
"My work pushes notions of androgyny and queer, combining both masculine and feminine qualities to establish something that is gender-neutral, gender fluid, transgender, or gender queer. My practice serves as rigorous experimentation that employs a scientific approach; I often juggle multiple paintings and add layers simultaneously to each current work, marginally altering a property to study the outcome. I also employ craft materials, primarily glitter, in order to recall femme, makeup, club, or drag cultures. Assorted recipes bring about diverse results, allowing my work to be a survey of potentially queer objects.
Being a painter who is strongly concerned with materiality, I allow the physicality of my work to arise from the alchemy of the paint. I often use various mediums and processes to create paint from scratch, break it down, change opacity and viscosity, adjust chromatic properties, or alter surface qualities as I feel needed. Various types of paint mixtures are layered over time, only to be smeared, scraped, and sanded, charging the work with a visceral energy that refers back to the physicality of process and the body. The process of covering and erasing these layers I have built up creates a back-and- forth of additive and subtractive, an accumulation and a diminishing. My current paintings revolve around the notion of creating space, particularly through abstraction from a queer perspective with a playful awkwardness. These self-contained worlds are made up of repeating stripes, gradated forms, twisted squiggles, and organic shapes. Skewed geometry with hard edges flirt with expressive grounds and fields of color, creating an ambiguous space that is dizzying, strange, and dynamic. The quirky geometry and irregularity of patterns allow for vulnerable and imperfect moments, and are equally about sameness as they are about difference. The work, both as physical objects and as windows into an illusionistic world, suggests a transfer between states— erratic and ever-evolving."

Cat Gunn is an artist living and working in Baltimore who identifies as non-binary transgender and queer. They create abstract paintings with layers of oil paints and mediums built up over time, using a variety of techniques to manipulate the alchemy of the paint. Gunn has recently exhibited work at Terrault Contemporary in Baltimore, MD, Maryland Art Place in Baltimore, MD, Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA, 40 West Arts Gallery in Lakewood, CO, and Ashton Gallery in San Diego, CA among others.
Gunn received a BFA in Painting from Towson University.

Application Deadline: Saturday, August 24, 2019

CALL FOR  ENTRY: CREATING CONNECTIONS
Maryland Art Place (MAP), in partnership with the CyberWire, is pleased to announce an open ‘Call to Artists’. As an extension of MAP’s annual IMPRINTProject, MAP is working with the CyberWire to offer a unique opportunity to female visual artists of the greater Baltimore metropolitan area. Collectively, MAP and the CyberWire wish to acquire and possibly commission (time permitting), and license the image of a work of art. The image of that artwork will be reproduced in a limited edition and presented to the guests of the CyberWire’s 6 the Annual Women in Cyber Security reception on October 24, 2019.

ABOUT “CREATING CONNECTIONS”:
We live in a time where cyberspace has become inextricably linked to the lives of individuals and organizations of all kinds. Cyberspace is the medium of global commerce and communication, and it is one of the most important factors in the social, political, and technological changes we see occurring today. The CyberWire provides concise and relevant daily briefings on the critical news happening across the global cybersecurity domain. In an industry overloaded with information, we also help individuals and organizations rapidly find the news and information that's important to them. As the aim of the CyberWire’s reception is to facilitate connections among women working in cybersecurity, and would like to acquire a work of art that reflects the theme of “creating connections.” Inherent in the idea of connections is the idea of networks—social networks, computer networks and support networks—which may be an important point of departure for acquired or commissioned work. This opportunity is open to female artists living and working in the greater Baltimore metropolitan area. The selected artist(s) will be joining a wonderful roster of artists as this program has developed over the last five years. They are: Claire Girodie (year14’), Anna and Caroline Zellhofer (year 15’), Lindsey McCulloch (year 16’), Carmen Martini year 17’), and Shanthi Chandrasekar (year 18’).

About the Women in Cyber Security Reception
Bringing together women from across the region and all different points on the career spectrum, this event will be an opportunity to get together and share what we are all passionate about—empowering women to succeed in the cybersecurity field. Leaders from industry, academia, and government can reconnect and strengthen existing relationships while building new ones. Those just starting out in their careers have the chance to meet the technical and business professionals who are shaping the future of cybersecurity. This invitation-only event will be held at the International Spy Museum at L’Enfant Plaza overlooking the Washington Monument and the Capitol in Washington, DC.

The CyberWire & the Arts
The CyberWire believes that having a thriving arts community is critical to the future of the state of Maryland—the place they have made their home. “Artists challenge the way we see and think about the world, and about ourselves—without this, we don’t learn, and we don’t grow; their work brings about new ideas, changes attitudes, and shapes culture—without this, we stagnate. The arts community is a wellspring of imagination and creativity—this is the fuel of innovation. The arts contribute immeasurably to the world we see around us, and to our quality of life—this creates a vibrant culture that attracts new residents, businesses, and sustains those that have already made their home here. We believe the arts are invaluable and desire our employees and their families to live and work in a visually and intellectually vibrant state for decades to come.” ~ The CyberWire team

Maryland Art Place and Area 405 Present Beyond Beautiful: One Thousand Love Letters in partnership with Bruun Studios

Maryland Art Place and Area 405 Present Beyond Beautiful: One Thousand Love Letters in partnership with Bruun Studios

January 2, 2019 Maryland Art Place (MAP) and Area 405 are pleased to present Beyond Beautiful: One Thousand Love Letters in partnership with Bruun Studios. The exhibition will open January 17th, 2019, at 5:30 in the evening at 218 West Saratoga Street, located in downtown Baltimore. Beyond Beautiful will be on display through March 10, 2019.

A project of artist and curator Peter Bruun, Beyond Beautiful: One Thousand Love Letters marvels at love in all its poignant mystery, surprise, and messiness. Anchored by hundreds of drawings by Bruun inspired by actual love letters, the two-site exhibition is organized around eight themes and features events for each, offering heart-opening performances, inspirational stories, communal sharing, and artistic uplift. The exhibition includes art by Atsuko Chirikjian, Loring Cornish, Pat Dennis, Phylicia Ghee, Ken Royster, Ernest Shaw, Piper Shepard, and Exsul Van Helden.

MAP's main gallery lends itself to the display of hundreds of drawings organized around four of Beyond Beautiful: One Thousand Love Letter's eight themes: "Forever Family," "Cupid's Arrow," "Wild Horses," and "Love Thy Self." Four exhibition programs will take place at Maryland Art Place featuring performances such as poetry, music, and storytelling. Featured performers at these events include George Spicka, Abu the Flutemaker, Navasha Daya, Betsey Hobelmann, David Fukunle, Simone Speed, Ken Royster, QueenEarth, Kirk Wulf, ellen cherry, Phylicia Ghee, and more.

  • Forever Family, Thursday, January 17, 5:30-8:00 pm
  • Cupid's Arrow, Wednesday, February 13, 5:30-8:00 pm
  • Wild Horses, Thursday, February 21, 5:30 - 8:00 pm
  • Love Thy Self, Thursday, March 7, 5:30-8:00 pm

Ernest Shaw’s piece, “Got Your Back”, is created especially for the exhibition and shown in the Forever Family section at Maryland Art Place. Shaw explains the symbolism in his painting as “to have your brothers back to the extent that you become one.”

Ken Royster, a Baltimore-based photographer and retired art professor from Morgan State University, has a knack for catching us in our most human moments. His photograph, entitled “Mary A.”, conveys in both body language and facial expression the euphoric exuberance accompanying romantic love, the subject of the Cupid’s Arrow section of the exhibition at Maryland Art Place.

Pat Dennis’ “Strength and Love” is included in the Wild Horses section of the—a section about love and addiction, as bumpy a ride as that upon a wild horse.

The exhibition will feature a video of the performance filmed by David Welch overlaid with a sound piece by Phylicia Ghee—created, especially for the Love Thy Self section of the exhibition. Much of Ghee’s work has a ceremonial quality, centering on a sense of oneness (and serenity) with the world, and the importance of healing attitudes and compassion toward one’s self.
