Press Release: MAP's 40th Anniversary Campaign

PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 18, 2021

MAP Announces

40th Anniversary Giving Campaign

March 18, 2021: Maryland Art Place (MAP) is pleased to announce its 40th Anniversary. MAP incorporated on January 30th, 1981 to “educate the general public in the area of contemporary visual art being produced by Maryland artists through exhibitions and performances, public relations and advertising, serving as an information center for Maryland artists and coordinating activities of other art-oriented institutions and organizations in Maryland.”?From its first home in the Candler Building in the Inner Harbor, MAP presented 14 shows, though a rent hike in 1984 left MAP with no permanent base. In response MAP developed programs without space restrictions: a state-wide exhibition series, a Critics’ Residency program, a public art program in conjunction with the Market Center Development Corporation, and Diverse Works, the first performance residency for interdisciplinary artists

Today MAP’s work continues in the same capacity. MAP directly supports 400-600 individual artists through exhibition opportunities, art sales, affordable rent, fiscal agency, internship opportunities, and more. MAP’s building is a beacon for the arts in downtown Baltimore city and vital to the cultural community as a safe, affordable place in which to show artwork, record albums, create films, fashion, and more. MAP’s Board President, Liz Courtemanche states, “We are thrilled to be able to celebrate forty-years of MAP, I know all of us connected to the organization are proud to have played some small part in the meaningful impact MAP has played in supporting our incredible local arts community”.?

Despite - or perhaps because of - the current climate, we continue to believe that the arts are essential to our health and well-being, and are dedicated to finding new ways to bring our services to the public that are representative of the artistic community as a whole. Ensuring that MAP’s building remains a beacon for artists downtown and that our services continue despite the pandemic is a top priority. - Amy Cavanaugh Royce, Executive Director.

On March 2, 2021,?MAP launched an online, giving campaign using the Givesmart platform:? MAP40.GIVESMART.COM?in honor of its 40th Anniversary and to raise needed funds during the Covid pandemic. Donors at the $30 level will receive a unique risograph 40th Anniversary print produced by Sense of Press and donors over $100 will receive both the risograph and MAP’s anniversary tee. Donating over $30 also gets you a sneak peek of MAP’s 24th Out of Order benefit exhibition

Sponsorship opportunities are available. For more information, email amy@mdartplace.org  or click HERE
