Programs Overview

Maryland Art Place (MAP) has been an anchor for contemporary arts in Maryland since 1981. Since its inception, MAP has effectively inspired, supported and encouraged artists in this region by offering exhibition opportunities, workshop and mentorship programs.

MAP creates a dynamic environment for artists to engage with the public, and each other, by nurturing and promoting new talents.

MAP offers a challenging schedule of innovative and diverse contemporary art experiences throughout the year. This includes the presentation of 6-8 annual exhibitions with complimentary programming including: gallery talks, performances and professional development workshops.

IMPRINT is an annual program that was initiated by the MAP staff in 2012 as way to highlight one singular, specific contemporary artist each year that is excelling in their selected media.

Young Blood 2017
Every year MAP's Program Advisory Committee (PAC) curates Young Blood, an annual exhibition of works by recent Baltimore-area Masters of Fine Art graduates.

IMPACT Project: La Quinta Inn & Suites, Baltimore Downtown
IMPACT is an annual, public art program developed in 2012 to extend Maryland Art Place’s reach to broader audiences throughout Maryland. Each IMPACT project is unique and developed based on the partnering site.

Out of Order Artist Info Workshop

Are you an artist looking to participate in MAP's 20th Annual Benefit Exhibition & Silent Auction, Out of Order?

This informational workshop is geared towards first-time participants of Out of Order. If you have questions about the show or the application process, bring them to this workshop!

We will be discussing past Out of Order exhibitions, tips on pricing your work, what kind of art to submit to the exhibition, as well as tips for networking and connecting with patrons at the event.

Workshop will take place Saturday, March 18 at 1pm at Maryland Art Place.

Guest speaker for the workshop is Amanda Burnham, member of MAP's Program Advisory Committee and internationally exhibiting artist.

Burnham's work has been exhibited widely; selected venues include the Volta Art Fair (Basel, Switzerland), the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art, the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, the Toledo Museum of Art, Artisphere, the Urban Institute of Contemporary Art, the Cranbrook Institute of Art, Benrimon Contemporary (NYC), Bridge Gallery (NYC), Christina Ray Gallery (NYC), Dorsch Gallery (Miami) and GV/AS Gallery (Brooklyn, NY). Local venues include the Creative Alliance, School 33, Maryland Art Place, Hamiltonian Gallery (DC), and Transformer (DC), among others. She has been the recipient of a Rubys Grant (2014), a Creative Baltimore Fund Award (2014), Individual Artist Awards from the Maryland State Arts Council in 2010 and 2013, and has been named a Sondheim Prize semifinalist in 2012, 2013, and 2014. A graduate of Harvard University (BA) and Yale University (MFA), Burnham is now an Associate Professor at Towson University.

May 17, 2018: Curators' Incubator Opening Reception

Maryland Art Place (MAP) is excited to restore the Curators’ Incubator program, slated to open May of 2018.  MAP established Curators’ Incubator in 2004 as a platform for aspiring curators to grow. In this program, MAP’s gallery is made available to an emerging curator or curatorial team to develop a creative, curatorial vision as part of a mentored partnership initiative. The program provides approximately 2,200 square feet of gallery space in downtown Baltimore, located within the Bromo Arts District.

The selected curator for Curators' Incubator will be announced this January 2018. Stay tuned!

Spin & Sell: Print Bazaar

Join us for our second Spin & Sell: Print Bazaar! 

Roam the MAP Underground for a two day market featuring unique prints, posters, clothing, gifts and more. Spin & Sell: Print Bazaar is a great way to discover and support local artists and print makers in Baltimore city.  The event will take place in the MAP Underground during UNDER $500 on Friday, Dec 8, and will feature DJ AK and karaoke! This event will take place upstairs in the MAP Gallery the following day on Saturday, Dec 9.

Friday, December 8 from 7 - 10 pm.  Tickets for admission are $5 at the door.  Stick around after the sale for karaoke from 10 pm - midnight.

Saturday, December 9 between 12-4pm. Admission on this day is FREE.

Young Blood 2017

Opening Reception: Wednesday, July 12, from 6-9pm

Exhibition Dates: July 12 - August 19, 2017

Every year MAP's Program Advisory Committee (PAC) curates Young Blood, an annual exhibition of works by recent Baltimore-area Masters of Fine Art graduates. The exhibition includes emerging artists from area colleges such as Maryland Institute College of Art, Towson and The University of Maryland. To date, Young Blood has provided an important post-graduate artistic platform for 79 transitioning Masters of Fine Arts students. Since 2008 this program has continually brought recent graduates together to make new connections and present special selections from their thesis exhibitions. This exhibition will highlight exceptional works ranging from painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, photography, and animation.

Ever wanted to curate your own show at Maryland Art Place (MAP)?  Now you can!

Maryland Art Place is thrilled to introduce its new MAP 'Member Gallery', located on the 2nd floor of 218 W Saratoga Street.  The Member Gallery is available to members for curatorial and project based use.  The Member Gallery will be open to the public during regular MAP gallery hours from 12-4pmTuesday - Saturday.

Exhibitions will be on display for three weeks, with one week before and after the show for installation and deinstallation. Curators may host an opening reception in the Member Gallery.

Proposals will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.  Exhibition proposals will be reviewed by MAP's staff and must align with MAP's overall mission, vision and values.  Proposals must include an exhibition statement, images of the work, installation plans, and any installation requirements or technical considerations. (Floor plans forthcoming for the space)

Rate:  $350 flat rate for members.

Provisions:  All installation materials will be the responsibility of the applicant.  This pilot program will run from June-December of 2017 and may be revised in 2018 in tandem with the launch of  MAP's new Membership structure.

IMPACT Project: La Quinta Inn & Suites, Baltimore Downtown

Maryland Art Place (MAP) is pleased to partner with La Quinta Inn & Suites, Baltimore Downtown for its annual IMPACT project of 2017. MAP is working with La Quinta Inn to produce a permanent mural on the exterior of La Quinta Inn’s entrance.

We are thrilled to announce Mike McConnell as our IMPACT 2017 public artist! Mike has created a high energy, two-panel mural to be displayed on La Quinta Inn & Suites' facade in downtown Baltimore.  "A 1975 graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art, Mike McConnell worked for more than 30 years as an illustrator before focusing on his fine art.  He often turns to nature for inspiration for the vivid visual stories he tells.  He uses paint in a collage-like way, cutting out shapes with vibrant colors on manmade wood panels, paper, and fond materials".  Mike McConnell's mural is on view now at La Quinta Inn & Suites!  Visit 200 W Saratoga Street in Baltimore to check out MAP's completed IMPACT project with La Quinta!

KIDOOO Install Day

April 1, 2017

Calling all Elementary, Middle School and High School level artists!

MAP is happy to introduce KIDOOO, a youth version of Out of Order!  KIDOOO was created as an opportunity for young artists to exhibit their work in a major arts venue, expanding MAP’s services to students in elementary, middle and high school level arts classes.  

Any artist is welcome to hang one original work of art on the first come, first served installation day of KIDOOO.  The open installation day for KIDOOO will take place on Saturday April 1, 2017 from 11am - 4pm. To participate in the exhibition, artists must be ages six-sixteen. No need to sign up in advance, just come by MAP's new 2nd floor Member Gallery @ 218 West Saratoga Street in the Bromo Tower Arts and Entertainment District!

The opening of KIDOOO will take place in tandem with MAP's annual Out of Order on April 7, 2017.

  • All work must come framed and ready to hang.  (size requirement is 24" x 24")
  • Registration is free
  • All works must be priced to sell and will be silently auctioned Friday, April 7, 2017 from 7 - 10pm
