On The Mind Artist Talk

On The Mind: Artist Talk
Featuring Mónica López-González and Jon Malis

March 11, at 7PM at Maryland Art Place.
Free no reservation required.

“On the Mind” is an exhibition that explores varying perspectives on the brain by artists Mónica López-González, Jon Malis, Lee Gainer & Nancy Andrews. Mónica López-González takes a detailed look at our minds on creativity. Through her studies on improvisation she unfolds what happens when one part of the brain assumes all responsibility in the creative process, while the other part of the brain quite literally lays dormant. Monica states, “I use both improvisatory techniques within black and white photography, and musical improvisation within cinema and theatre to explore the process of spontaneous creative thinking and emotion perception.”

Artist, Jon Malis explores the brain as an object and early attempts to capture, read, preserve and understand the brain. Through his photography we, the onlookers, may view the brain as both terrifying and beautiful. His images examine an archive of hundred-year-old scientific studies of the human brain, produced by pathologists at Saint Elizabeth's Hospital, one of the oldest mental health institutions in this country.

IMPACT at Green Spring Station

Maryland Art Place (MAP) is pleased to announce our final IMPACT project of the year at Green Spring Station. MAP in partnership with Green Spring Station has been working with students from MICA to create temporary indoor installations comprised of items from the merchants of the shopping center. The installations will remain on view until the end of the year.

The students from Susie Brandt’s Accumulation and Metaphor fall 2015 class at MICA were paired into groups and have made sculptures that responded to different sites around Green Spring Station. The ‘Vine’ group has transformed an existing lamppost in the concourse into a vine like network with materials mimicking leaves, flowers and fruits. The ‘Ceiling’ group has created a ceiling installation of netting and rope accumulating various clothing such as shirts, scarves and wedding veils. And the “Plaza’ group created a stand alone sculpture consisting of consumer materials painted black obscuring their identifiers and function.

Students include: Astrid Albert, Courtney Cooper, Evee Erb, Kilynne Higgins, Rae Koch, Brandon Leung, Marie Claire Macadar, Joseph Malson, Maya Martinez, Kara Mason, Hannah Muchnick, Anthony Nguyen, Yun Seok Oh, Aubrey Vinson, Emma Whitlock and Alli Woodhouse.

IMPACT is an annual, public art program developed to extend Maryland Art Place’s reach to broader audiences bringing the work of living artists into the public eye. Each IMPACT project is unique and developed based on the partnering site.

MAP would like to extend a thank you to all the community partners and The Citizens of Baltimore County for their support.

About Green Spring Station: Green Spring Station is a mixed-use center featuring Baltimore’s largest collection of locally-owned boutiques, cafes and restaurants. Green Spring Station is conveniently located at the intersection of I-83 and I-695 at 10803 Falls Road Lutherville, Maryland 21093.
